Inebriated Dramaturgy: MacKenzie Taylor @ Edfringe 2017

Yuffa Fringe and Probably Still Drunk Collective presents
Inebriated

Toronto/Edinburgh – Ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between, we are going to take you on a journey through time, body, and intoxication. Chuck your beer because it’s going to be a bumpy ride navigating your inebriated ass through history’s hot sweaty 100,000-year fornication fest with substance.

Inebriated is an hour celebrating the brave, drunken, high, and sex-crazed pioneers that built our civilization one bad choice at a time. Watch us as we stumble in their footsteps. Inebriated will take you on a journey through time as we try to better understand our own addictions to our vice of choice. We will try to understand by looking through history and seeing why we as a civilization have been making these same mistakes since the beginning of time.

What was the inspiration for this performance?

In all honestly the inspiration for this piece was having a good time! It was through discovering the history of how these vices have always helped humans have a good time did we find a story to tell. We used our personal stories and humor to really pay homage to the great partiers before us, the partiers that changed the world.

Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?

Absolutely. Performance allows us to present our worldview from our prospective, and then it allows an audience to peer into your mind and how you view things. The audience can either say, “I see things that way too!” or “Wow that’s not how see it.” without having a one on one conversation a whole dialogue was opened up and now with social media if compelled the audience can then go online and continue the discussion.

How did you become interested in making performance?

I don’t have a single memory of not being interested in making performance. I started making performance of dance and music for my parents as soon as I could walk and talk and I never stopped.

Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?

I have begun to realize that every rehearsal process should feel as distinctly different and unique as the shows themselves, and we can do this when we allow the show to shape the rehearsal process. For Inebriated we started with so many personal stories and experiences surrounding the idea of substance and vice and those stories have developed into a more overarching story.

As opposed to starting with an issue, cause or idea and basing stories around that as many of us have worked in the past, in the process of Inebriated we started with the stories and historical contexts behind them, and found the common layers and threads between them.

Does the show fit with your usual productions?

This is our first show with this collective, so it fits perfectly.

What do you hope that the audience will experience?

I hope the audience will be taken on a hazy crazy inebriated trip. I hope they laugh, I hope they have fun, and I hope they leave with a little historical knowledge behind their vices.

What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?

We put ourselves into it, our personal stories and beliefs, and we made a show that we would want to see at fringe. It also helped that we have a collective filled with so many different sense of humors and passions.

Inebriated will be presented at Venue 13, located on Lochend Close (just off the Royal Mile). The show opens at 13:20 on Sunday August 13, 2017. The show continues on August 16 and 18 at 13:20 and August 20-26 at 21:30. The show will close Saturday August 26, 2017.
