Wind-up Dramaturgy: 420 People @ Edfringe 2017

10 – 19 Aug, 15.20
Wind-Up: by 420PEOPLE

Inspired by energy’s accumulation and explosion, Prague’s 420PEOPLE deliver a dynamic sextet made of ferocious energy, finest movement and original music

What was the inspiration for this performance?

Time pressure. The fact of not having enough time for anything. Yet, at the same time, very exciting times. And the awareness that no matter what or how much I try to challenge the time itself, it does not matter - it just keeps on going. Very basic, very inspirational.

Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?

Yes, definitely. The unexpected may come at anytime. And the audience is hopefully ‘touched’ in some way (positive or negative); they are hopefully beyond their safety zone and therefore more open to approach everyday matters in a fresh way.

How did you become interested in making performance?

I simply felt I had something to say. I wanted to share my own ‘voice’. I wanted to touch people.

Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?

In general, no. I mean, one should know what he/she wants to say, feel, transmit etc.
With regards to our show - we had clear guidelines about combusting and compressing and subsequently releasing the energy. In terms of the ‘mood’ - since we are getting older even as we perform, or watch the show for that matter, let’s have the most out of it. Let’s fulfill the time to no regrets.

Does the show fit with your usual productions?

This time (at Fringe) it’s gonna be missing some parts (projection, images) which were originally there to enhance the story. However, hopefully the show will make sense even in this simplified form, as it is an opportunity to search for the absolute essence of it. Which I see as a healthy and worthy new experience. And with regards to my previous answers - let’s make the most of it - not only for the Fringe, but for ourselves as well.

What do you hope that the audience will experience?

Ultimately, I hope they will experience what the show is about - pressure of time and the very absolute point that no matter what, we are all ageing with every second. Between the start of this Q&A and now, you did age, that’s a fact.

What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?

Honesty, simplicity, clarity, virtuosity, professionalism - and as performers, we are trying to remain as touchable/normal as possible towards the audience.
