EURODRAMATURGY: Otto Rot @ Edfringe 2017

Otto & Astrid:

EUROSMASH! (Die Roten Punkte)

22:10 (70 mins)

3– 27 August(Not 9, not 15)

What was the inspiration for this performance?

This time in Edinburgh my sister Astrid and I are playing all the songs from our EUROSMASH! album. We wanted to create the best rock and roll concert you’ve ever seen in your life. It starts with a song called Do You Speak Dance? where NASA asks us to go to planet Kepler 22b. We find out that the only way to communicate with them is to make a party with them.

Is performance still a good space for the public discussion of ideas?

Yes! Sometimes I have ideas and Astrid won’t listen. So it’s much better when we do a performance in front of an audience. That way it’s not just Astrid listening.

How did you become interested in making performance?

We saw David Bowie in Berlin on his Sound and Vision tour. It was like being touched by an angel.  Our whole lives changed. We started a band and never looked back.

Is there any particular approach to the making of the show?

Every night before we go on stage we think about our rock and roll heroes and try to channel their amazingness. I think about Iggy Pop, Pete Townsend, The Hives. I try to inject every moment with as much energy as they do.

Does the show fit with your usual productions?

This is our third time to Edinburgh. The first time we did songs from Super Musician. With that album we wanted to make the best rock album we could. The next time we did Kunst Rock (Art Rock). That was more experimental and avant garde. Eurosmash! much more of a Europop album. There’s still songs with drums and guitar, but there’s more dancey songs.

What do you hope that the audience will experience?

Like they’ve just eaten a sweet juicy rock and roll mango and it’s made a party all over their face.

What strategies did you consider towards shaping this audience experience?

We played shows all over the world and when people went crazy and made a party we know we had something.
